Show Notes

When you think about your child’s learning this year…what do you think of?  How do you feel?
I would bet some of those feelings might include frustration with technology and schedules... guilt for being torn between work and helping with Zoom or school assignments…and overwhelm as to knowing how to help your kids with their learning and how to help them succeed as you move into the end of this school year.

But, I bet you haven’t just been disappointed and frustrated with your child’s education since Covid-19 came upon us almost a year ago.  I can almost bet your frustration stems from some other issues that make you feel uneasy about education today.  Issues like excessive testing, insane standards, reduced recess time, and far less opportunities for free reading than before.

"The results demonstrate what reading experts say they already knew about U.S. students' reading abilities: Most students leave the primary grades as competent readers steeped in the basics, but many fail to refine and build on their skills as they move through middle and high school."

ACCORDING TO THE US DEPT. OF EDUCATION:  "45 million are functionally illiterate and read below a 5th grade level. 50% of adults cannot read a book written at an eighth grade level."

“Unfortunately, the older a child is, the more difficult it is to teach him or her to read. If a child can't read well by the end of third grade, odds are that he or she will never catch up. And the effects of falling behind and feeling like a failure can be devastating.”

Do we dare ask ourselves, is this the time to make necessary changes to our education system?  What do we do now to help our children still succeed?  What a time in history that gives the power to the parents to really see what their children are learning and not learning.

"We can best help children learn, not be deciding what we think they should learn and thinking of ingenious ways to teach it to them, but by making the world, as far as we can, accessible to them, paying serious attention to what they do, answering their questions – if they have any – and helping them explore the things they are most interested in. – John Holt
